Goodreads Synopsis:

Nicolette Bresson never thought she’d return to the de Vincents’ bayou compound. It’s where her parents work, where Nikki grew up... and where she got her heart broken by Gabriel de Vincent himself. Yet here she is, filling in for her sick mother. Avoiding Gabe should be easy, especially when so much of Nikki’s time is spent trying not to be stabbed in the back by the malicious hangers-on who frequent the mansion. But escaping memories of Gabe, much less his smoking-hot presence, is harder than expected—especially since he seems determined to be in Nikki’s space as much as possible.

Gabriel spent years beating himself up over his last encounter with Nikki. He’d wanted her then, but for reasons that were bad for both of them. Things have now changed. Gabe sees more than a girl he’s known forever; he sees a smart, talented, and heartbreakingly beautiful woman... one who’s being stalked from the shadows. Now, Gabe will do anything to keep Nikki safe—and to stop the de Vincent curse from striking again.

Book Review:
Pre-reading Thoughts:

I have never read a Jennifer L. Armentrout book before so I am so happy that this one gets to be my first. I have really started to get into New Adults lately. This book sounds like it is definitely going to be interesting.

Thank you so much to Social Butterfly PR for providing me with a copy of this book. Just a small disclaimer for those reading this review. I have received this book for free. Please note that this does not affect my opinion in any way. All thoughts are my own.

Writing Thoughts:

The writing just pulled me in straight away. It had a really good pace to it. The style wasn't difficult to get into but it did take some time to get into. I felt like there was a lack of detail when it came to Gabe. All the other characters had a reasonable amount of detail to describe them except Gabe. I felt like he didn't have a lot which contrasted Nikki's descriptions.

Plot Thoughts:

The plot took a while to unfold. It was almost long winded and did not need that much "meat". U kind of got to the point where I was like okay... the romance and actual storyline can start now. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the story but I wish it was shorter. The plot was juicy because we are presented with this mystery and honestly, I was not ready for some of the answers. The romance was definitely hot so I do not recommend for young readers.

Character Thoughts:

Nikki and Gabe's relationship can definitely be considered harmful in so many ways. Gabe is kind of a horrible person to Nikki in the beginning and when you learn about some of the things he has done to her it kind of is just like what??!!. I felt like Nikki was a very interesting person because she tried to be better and not fall in love with Gabe because she knew her relationship with him was harmful but then there is this feeling that she can't get over.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, this book is probably not the best in terms of being a role model for relationships. However, if we just focus on the romance, it was good. The writing was difficult to get into but it still captured my eye. The plot was a little long but I think that it did a good job of keeping us interested. The characters were interesting but the relationship is harmful. However, I was absolute trash for the romance even though I wasn't 100% there for the pairing. There is no denying that Armentrout can write romance. I was absolutely swooning for some of the scenes and I desperately wish that someone will bring me a smoothie every day whilst I work. Thank you so much to Social Butterfly PR for providing me with a copy of this book.
