Nocturne, a wilderness of eternal night.
Solis, a wasteland of endless day.
Nazafareen is a Breaker, a mortal who has the rare ability to shatter spell magic—although her power carries a high price. With the memories of her former self erased and nowhere else to turn, she comes to Nocturne hoping to start a new life under the triple moons of the darklands.
But when an assassin forces Nazafareen to flee to the sunlit mortal city of Delphi, she finds herself embroiled in a deeper mystery whose origins lie far in the past. Why was the continent sundered into light and dark a thousand years before? And what really happened to the elegant but ruthless creatures who nearly reduced the world to ashes? The new Oracle might know, but she’s outlawed magic and executes anyone caught practicing it. Nazafareen must hide her powers and find a way out of the city—before it’s too late.
As the net slowly tightens, something ancient and vengeful begins to stir in the arid death zone called the Kiln. A dashing daeva named Darius is pursuing Nazafareen, but so are a multitude of enemies. War is brewing again. Can she stay alive long enough to stop it?
So begins the first installment in an epic new fantasy series from the author of the Fourth Element Trilogy!
Book Review:
Pre-reading Thoughts:
I love Kat Ross, I read her Fourth Elemental Series and I just loved it. She has this way with worlds and her world-building is just impeccable. Honestly, I don't know why more people haven't read her books. I cannot wait to read this book. I have no idea what is it about, I have certain expectations but we'll have to see how everything unfolds.
Thank you to Xpresso Book Tours for providing me with a copy for this book! I cannot wait to jump into this book. Just a small little disclaimer for those reading this review. Writing Thoughts:
The author's writing has not changed much. It is still rich with detail and has amazing pacing. The dialogue is still filled with emotions. I absolutely love Ross's writing. It is literally almost everything that I could ever want in a writing style. Her way with words is unique and enticing.
Plot Thoughts:
I am so happy that I went into this book without knowing anything about it. It was such a pleasant surprise to see some familiar faces. You definitely do not need to read the previous series but if you would like a little bit more in-depth knowledge on both the characters and the world, then I definitely recommend it! The plot starts out nice and easy. It gives you a bit of time to get used the book and the world. This book contains multiple point of views for those who don't prefer it. The author does do a fantastic job with this. Each character's voice is clear and different from the others. The plot was well thought out and overall, it just pulls you into the world and just doesn't let you go.
Character Thoughts:
As mentioned, I saw some familiar faces. If you would like to see my thoughts on them, I would definitely look at my reviews for the Fourth Element Trilogy. The characters in this book were rich with dimension and emotions. They were well rounded and overall wonderful to read about!
Final Thoughts:
Overall, this book was a pleasant surprised. I was so worried about this book not being able to live up to my expectations of the previous series that I didn't even realise that this series is taking place directly after. The characters were just as rich and amazing as the previous series. The writing was gorgeous and something that I wouldn't mind reading over and over. The plot was also just as well thought out. Kat Ross is a must read author. This is definitely one indie author you shouldn't miss out on. Thank you so much to Xpresso Book Tours for providing me with a copy go this book!
About the Author:
Kat Ross worked as a journalist at the United Nations for ten years before happily falling back into what she likes best: making stuff up. She's the author of the dystopian thriller Some Fine Day, the Fourth Element fantasy trilogy (The Midnight Sea, Blood of the Prophet, Queen of Chaos), and a new gaslamp mystery series that opens with The Daemoniac and continues with The Thirteenth Gate. She loves myths, monsters and doomsday scenarios. For more information about Kat's books, come visit her at katrossbooks.com.

Great review! I love a detailed writing style that really brings you into the story! It sounds like a compelling, exciting book! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you SO much! I'm really enjoying writing POVs of some of the characters from the previous series like Darius and Victor, and just digging deeper into their world. Writing a longer series gives a lot of breathing space to the story. I can't wait to see what you think of Solis. Things really start to unravel and come together at the same time, if you know what I mean, lol!
