Goodreads Synopsis:
A sound awakens her. There's darkness all around. And then she's falling...
She has no idea who or where she is. Or why she's dead. The only clue to her identity hangs around her neck. A single, rusted key. This is how she and the others receive their names; from whatever belongings they had when they fell out of their graves. None of them remember who they used to be. Under is a place of dirt and nightmares, and Key is determined to discover the secrets of her past in order to escape it.
She needs help, but who can she trust? Ribbon seems content in Under, uninterested in finding answers. There's Smoke, the boy with sharp words and a fierceness that rivals even the living. And Journal, the boy who stays apart from everyone else and loses himself in books and science. Key's instincts tell her that there is something remarkable about each of them, even if she can't remember why.
The the murders start; bodies that are burnt to a crisp. After being burned, the dead stay dead. Key is running out of time to discover who she was - and what secret someone is willing to kill to keep hidden - before she becomes the next victim...
Book Review:
Pre-reading Thoughts:
Before we move further, I just want to say congratulations on publication Kelsey! This book sounds so interesting and unique. I am interested see where this standalone will take me. The characters sound interesting as well! I definitely couldn't' wait to pick this book up. Since the author asked me to review this book, the synopsis has haunted me. I just couldn't wait!
Thank you so much to the author, Kelsey Sutton, for sending me a copy of her book to review! I cannot wait to jump into this book! Just a small little disclaimer for those reading this review. I received this book for free. No money from my pocket was spent in getting this book. Please note that in no way does this affect my opinion. All thoughts still remain my own.
Writing Thoughts:
The writing in this book was good but it wasn't what really drew me into the story. The author tended to tell us instead of showing which didn't end up being a big thing but did make is slightly difficult to connect with the characters and envision the settings where the story took place.
Plot Thoughts:
This concept is so unique. I absolutely enjoyed this story. We got to learn along the way with the main character which helped you to feel included in the story. Not only was the story interesting by keeping you guess who the murderer is but there was just so many great things happening all the time. The author also insured that you didn't feel like there was an information overload. The story as highly entertaining and well thought through. Everything that happen had a reason.
Character Thoughts:
I really enjoyed the characters but I didn't quite connect with the characters. Whilst they were interesting, it felt like they lacked a little bit of something. But they were still somewhat rounded. They definitely became more interesting as the story continued.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It kept me enticed and made me read on just so that I could find out who the killer was. I thought that the author was really good and keeping the identity of the murderer a secret because there was no real way to guess who it could be. I loved the plot of the book. It was enticing and kept me going. I liked the characters and the writing but for the plot was the aspect that really made this story for me. It was absolutely amazing. I definitely think that this is one book that shouldn't be missed. Thank you so much to the author, Kelsey Sutton, for sending me a copy this book to review!
Yours in Reading,
Melleny
