Goodreads Synopsis:

Thais Fenwick was eleven-years-old when civilization fell, devastated by a virus that killed off the majority of the world’s population. For seven years, Thais and her family lived in a community of survivors deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. But when her town is attacked by raiders, she and her blind sister are taken away to the East-Central Territory where she is destined to live the cruel and unjust kind of life her late mother warned her about.

Atticus Hunt is a troubled soldier in Lexington City who has spent the past seven years trying to conform to the vicious nature of men in a post-apocalyptic society. He knows that in order to survive, he must abandon his morals and his conscience and become like those he is surrounded by. But when he meets Thais, morals and conscience win out over conformity, and he risks his rank and his life to help her. They escape the city and set out together on a long and perilous journey to find safety in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Struggling to survive in a world without electricity, food, shelter, and clean water, Atticus and Thais shed their fear of growing too close, and they fall hopelessly in love. But can love survive in such dark times, or is it fated to die with them?

Book Review:
Pre-reading Thoughts:

I am going into this book 100% blind. I don't have any expectations other than the fact that this book is a tome. It is massive.

Thank you so much to Lola Blogs Tours for providing me with a copy of this book. Just a small disclaimer for those reading this review. I have received this book for free. Please note that this does not affect my opinion in any way. All thoughts are my own.

Writing Thoughts:

The writing in this book was actually really good. The pacing was really good and the author didn't flood her writing with too much detail or create a lack of it. This meant that the writing was heavy and nor was it taxing on the reader's brain. I really enjoyed the dialogue in this book. It was both entertaining and heartfelt.

Plot Thoughts:

Oh my goodness. This was so long but it was also good? I really enjoyed what happened in this book. It was well planned out because the action moments happened at the right before things a got a little too bland. The action scenes unfolded quite well and definitely spurred the reader on to the next one. I definitely think that this book should be split up a bit. It's a lot of content to consume in one novel, even though it was a slow burning plot.

Character Thoughts:

The massiveness of the novel really allowed for some great character development. Both the main character experienced a fantastic character arc. I would definitely say that the novel was mostly character driven even though the plot was there.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The writing, plot and characters were incredible but the length of the novel definitely made this book difficult to read. The writing style is probably one of my favourites so far. It really pulled me into the story. The plot was fleshed out and the actions scenes were distributed really well. The character development in this book was insane. It was definitely one of my favourite things about this novel. Thank you so much to Lola Blog Tours for providing me with a copy of this book.
