The Meduans and Lanserim have maintained an uneasy truce for two generations, but their ways of life are compatible as oil and water.
When Vesperi, a Meduan noblewoman, kills a Lanserim spy with a lick of her silver flame, she hopes the powerful display of magic will convince her father to name her as his heir. She doesn't know the act will draw the eye of the tyrannical Guj, Medua's elder, or that the spy of was the bother of Serrafina Gavenstone, the fianceé of Turyn's grandson, Prince Janto. As Janto sets out for an annual competition on the mysterious island of Braven, Serra accepts an invitation to study with the religious Brotherhood, hoping for somewhere to grieve her bother's murder in peace. What she finds instead is a horror that threatens both countries, devouring all living things and leaving husks of skin in its wake.
To defeat it, Janto and Serra must lean to work together with the only person who possesses the magic that can: the beautiful Vesperi, who no one know murdered Serra's brother. An ultimate rejection plunges Vesperi forward toward their destiny, with the powerful Gun on her heals and the menacing beating of unseens wings all about.

Writing Thoughts:
The writing in this book was a little bit weird. There were so many point of views that I feel that the author's voice along with her characters voices got lost in the process. They all started to sound the same. I definitely was not a fan of the writing style.
Plot Thoughts:
The plot presented by the blurb sounds amazing but it just took way to long to happen. I understand that the author wanted to do some world building but because of the millions of point of views, the plot took way long to take place and when it did happen, I found that I wasn't really into the story any more. Another reason as to why I was kind of put off the story was the disregard and lack of respect for woman in Medua. It was appalling and completely off putting.
Character Thoughts:
I think the primary characters were probably the only redeeming quality of this book. They a majority of them were well rounded. Vesperi managed to strive despite the harsh up bringing and environment she had. I think that she was probably my favourite character out of the cast in this book.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, I wasn't really impressed with this book. The writing and I definitely weren't going to be friends. There were just too many point of views which made the plot seem slower than it actually was. The abuse and behaviour directed towards woman was extremely off putting. However, the primary characters redeemed the story. Thank you so much to Xpresso Book Tours for providing me with a copy go this book!
